Research is frequently misunderstood as a purely mechanical process of collecting data, running tests, and reporting answers. People often imagine scientists in laboratories or sociologists handing out surveys, focusing entirely on the visible actions of the study. However, the most critical part of any research project actually begins long before the first piece of data is collected. It starts in the mind of the researcher with how they fundamentally see the world. This hidden starting point is known in academic terms as a research paradigm (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).
A paradigm is essentially a worldview. It includes a researcher's deeply held beliefs about the nature of reality, the nature of knowledge, and the specific steps required to uncover that knowledge. Among these foundational beliefs, ontology is the most basic and arguably the most important. Ontology controls what a researcher thinks is real, what they believe exists, and what is actually possible to study. Without a clear understanding of their own ontology, a researcher is navigating a complex landscape without a map, risking confusion and a lack of credibility in their final results.
Understanding the Meaning of Ontology
Ontology is a complex concept that originates from philosophy, but it can be understood in very practical terms. Simply put, ontology is the study of what exists and the fundamental nature of reality (Crotty, 1998). When beginning a new project, a researcher must ask themselves some profound questions. They must decide if reality is a solid, factual thing that exists independently, outside of human minds and interpretations. Alternatively, they must consider if reality is something that human beings actively create in their own heads through their unique daily experiences, their language, and their cultural backgrounds.
To understand this, researchers generally look at two main opposing viewpoints on the ontological spectrum. The first viewpoint is called realism. Realism is the belief that the physical and social world exists completely on its own, regardless of what humans think about it or how they perceive it. In a realist worldview, facts are waiting to be discovered, much like a hidden treasure. The second viewpoint is called relativism, sometimes referred to as constructivism. Relativism is the belief that reality changes depending on who is experiencing it and the context of their life (Guba & Lincoln, 1994). In a relativist worldview, there is no single universal truth, but rather multiple realities that are shaped by human connection and social understanding.

For someone conducting a practical study, ontology acts as an internal compass. It serves as their personal belief system regarding the specific topic they are investigating. This worldview is not just a theoretical idea; it changes what the researcher actually sees when they look at a problem. For example, consider a researcher who is investigating the issue of poverty in an urban neighborhood. Their ontological stance will completely change the direction of their study.
A researcher approaching poverty with a realist worldview will look at the issue as a strict, measurable fact. They will focus on tangible elements like income levels, unemployment rates, housing data, and nutritional deficits. They believe poverty is an objective condition that can be quantified. On the other hand, a researcher approaching the exact same neighborhood with a relativist worldview will look at poverty as an emotional, psychological, and social experience. They will focus on how poverty feels to the individual, how it affects their sense of dignity, and how the community talks about their struggles. A researcher’s cultural background, family history, and educational training slowly shape this worldview over many years (Bryman, 2016). Recognizing and admitting to this personal worldview is the very first step toward conducting honest and trustworthy scientific inquiry.
Forming Concepts and Building Knowledge
Ontology does not work alone; it operates closely with epistemology. Epistemology is the philosophical study of how we gather knowledge and how we know what we claim to know. Together, ontology and epistemology help a researcher define the very concepts they are studying. How a researcher defines a concept is entirely dependent on what they believe that concept actually is.
Take mental health as a practical example. If a researcher believes that human emotion is strictly a physical, chemical reaction occurring in the brain, their ontology is grounded in realism. Consequently, they will define a concept like depression using medical terminology, focusing on neurotransmitters and genetics. However, if a researcher believes that emotions are created through social problems, trauma, and human relationships, their ontology leans toward relativism. They will define depression based on community isolation, life events, and personal narratives (Braun & Clarke, 2021). Furthermore, ontology dictates how researchers believe they should create knowledge. Realist researchers believe their job is to uncover hidden facts while remaining totally separate from the subject. Relativist researchers believe their job is to build knowledge collaboratively through active conversations and shared experiences with the people they are studying (Crotty, 1998).
How Ontology Shapes the Research Question
The practical impact of a researcher's worldview becomes highly visible when it is time to design the study. The very first practical step in any project is writing the main research question. Because researchers have completely differing views on what reality is, they will naturally ask very different questions about the same topic. The research question is a direct reflection of the researcher's internal ontology.
A researcher with a realist perspective will ask questions that seek to establish clear cause-and-effect relationships. They want to find a single, universal truth that can be applied broadly. For example, in an educational study, a realist might ask how a specific new reading program affects the standardized test scores of third-grade students. This question assumes that reading ability is a measurable reality. Conversely, a researcher with a relativist perspective will ask questions about human experience and personal understanding. They want to explore the depth of a specific situation. In that same educational setting, the relativist might ask how third-grade students feel about their new reading program and how it changes their confidence in the classroom (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).
Choosing Methods and Collecting Data
After formulating a clear question, the researcher must select a practical method to find the answer. Ontology strictly limits these methodological choices. A researcher cannot logically believe that reality is highly personal and emotional, and then use a standardized math test to measure it. The method must match the worldview.
If a researcher believes there is one solid, objective reality, they will logically turn to numbers, standardized surveys, and controlled scientific experiments. This approach is widely known as quantitative research. Quantitative methods are designed to measure reality objectively, without interference. If a researcher believes that reality is based on personal feelings and complex social interactions, they will reject surveys in favor of open-ended interviews, focus groups, and storytelling. This approach is known as qualitative research (Bryman, 2016). During the data collection phase, a realist researcher will maintain a strict distance from the participants. They do this to avoid contaminating the data with their own personal biases. Conversely, a relativist researcher will intentionally get close to the people they study. They believe that building trust and establishing a human connection is the only genuine way to uncover the rich, complex reality of another person's life.
Analyzing the Information and Pragmatism
Finally, ontology dictates how a researcher will process and interpret the data they have spent months or years collecting. The analytical phase is heavily influenced by the initial assumptions made at the start of the project. A researcher operating with a realist view will use mathematical models and statistical software to analyze their numerical data. Their goal is to find absolute rules, probabilities, and patterns that apply universally to the general population. They want to prove that their findings are true for everyone.
A researcher operating with a relativist view will approach data analysis much differently. They will carefully read hundreds of pages of interview transcripts and personal notes to find deep emotional themes and social patterns. They are fully aware that their findings might only apply to the specific, small group of people they spent time with, and they view this as a strength rather than a weakness (Braun & Clarke, 2021).
It is also vital to recognize a practical middle ground in modern research, which is known as pragmatism. Pragmatist researchers are less concerned with the strict philosophical debate between realism and relativism. Instead, they focus simply on whatever method works best to solve a specific, real-world problem. A pragmatist believes that reality is complex and sometimes requires multiple tools to understand. Therefore, they will often mix both numbers and personal stories together in a single study, using a mixed-methods approach to gain the most comprehensive understanding of the issue at hand (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).

In conclusion, the ontology of a person is the silent engine driving their entire research endeavor. It establishes the boundaries of their ideas, shapes the concepts they study, and directs every practical choice they make along the way. From the formulation of the very first research question to the final interpretation of the gathered data, ontology is a constant, guiding force. Ignoring one's own worldview is incredibly risky; it is similar to attempting to build a large house without checking to see if the foundation is solid first. When researchers take the time to deeply reflect upon and understand their own fundamental beliefs about reality, they ensure that their methods match their questions. As a result, they produce clearer, more honest, and highly practical work that truly contributes to the expansion of human knowledge.
